Overview

The Emergency Care in Sport (ECS) course is designed to prepare sports medicine team members to manage emergency situations. Emergency situations may arise at any time during athletic events. Expedient action must be taken to provide the best possible care to the sport participant with emergency and life or limb threatening conditions. The development and implementation of an emergency plan helps ensure that the best care will be provided. Athletic organizations have a duty to develop an emergency plan that may be implemented immediately when necessary and to provide appropriate standards of emergency care to all sports participants. Emergency preparation involves formulation of an emergency plan, proper coverage of events, maintenance of appropriate emergency equipment and supplies, utilization of appropriate emergency medical personnel, and continuing education in emergency medicine. The ECS course features top healthcare professionals from across the country skilled in emergency medicine and includes both didactic presentations and hands-on skill laboratory sessions using scenario-based learning.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Implement the Pre-Event Medical Time-Out: Designate a specific time before events to assess readiness and finalize medical preparations.
  2. Develop Venue-Specific Emergency Action Plans (EAPs): Tailor EAPs to each venue to ensure effective emergency response.
  3. Create a Mental Health Emergency Action Plan: Address mental health emergencies with clear protocols and resources.
  4. Determine the Required Number of Medical Professionals for Proper Emergency Coverage: Assess and allocate the appropriate number of qualified medical staff based on event size and risk.
  5. Select, Deploy, and Maintain Emergency Medical Equipment and Supplies: Understand how to choose the right equipment, strategically deploy it, and ensure regular maintenance.
  6. Utilize Qualified Emergency Medical Personnel: Ensure the presence of well-trained medical professionals during all events.
  7. Understand Best Practices for Recognizing and Managing Emergency Situations in Athletics: Be knowledgeable in identifying and addressing various emergency scenarios in sports settings.
  8. Prioritize Scenario-Based Training in Emergency Medicine: Use realistic, scenario-based training to prepare for potential emergencies.
  9. Understand Care Options for Spine-Injured Athletes in Pre-Hospital Settings: Know the appropriate protocols and interventions for athletes with suspected spinal injuries before hospital care, including equipment removal in equipment intensive sports such as football, hockey, and lacrosse.
  10. Implement an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Program: Ensure the availability of AEDs and that staff are trained to use them effectively.
  11. Establish an On-Site Emergency Cooling Program for Heat-Related Emergencies: Implement cooling protocols and equipment for the management of heat-related illnesses and concept of “cool first, then transport”.
  12. Understand Management Concepts for Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA): Be well-versed in the immediate response and treatment of SCA events.
  13. Understand Management Concepts for General Medical Emergencies: Maintain knowledge of common medical emergencies and appropriate interventions.
  14. Understand Management Concepts for Orthopedic Emergencies: Be equipped to manage musculoskeletal injuries, including fractures, dislocations, and determining neurovascular status.
  15. Implement a Review Process After Emergencies and Post-Emergency Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM): Establish a protocol for reviewing emergency responses and providing CISM support for staff and athletes involved.
